Bookkeeping has been named one of the top ways to earn money while working from home. The market is flooded with groups, schools, coaches, and so forth, telling you how easy it is to get started. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Start building your company today! Hey, I did it. I started my own bookkeeping services company. Was it easy, yes and no. You see, I did have the experience, 25 plus years of experience in various forms of budging, money management, office management, company development, payroll, and full-charge bookkeeping. I also realized I did not know everything that I needed to begin. I needed to build the foundation that I would rest my company on. It would have been easy to jump right in, start advertising my company, use freelancer websites, or create a group on Facebook to gather clients, but I didn’t, and my company is better for it.
Instead, I started to build the foundation that I would need for the company to be successful. Here are the building blocks/steps that I took.
-
Before you start marketing your services, make sure your business acumen is up to par. There several mistakes that owners make that will cause them to close their doors in three years. There are classes under the LinkedIn Learning platform that are valuable and worth the investment when planning your launch
-
Pick your accounting software and study up. Become familiar with QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Freshbook, Drake, and Wave. There are many more, but these are common platforms in bookkeeping.
-
Get your professional certifications and attend training.
-
Take the time to develop a brand and a name. These are two things not to rush. They are the identity your company is going to be recognized for. Take your time. Get it right
-
Develop a logo for the company, I had the skill to design it myself, so I had a cost-saving from the start. If you do not have the skill, please invest in a pro or freelancer to build the right one for your company.
-
You will need to purchase a domain name. There are many different places to go through to do this part. I used Google Domains and have a Google Workspace Business account.
-
Start developing your website. There are again many different companies online to use yourself or investing in a solid website.
-
Develop a social media presence for your company.
You are probably sitting there going; hey, I need the business now. Okay, if you need to start earning right away and feel that you have the skill and knowledge to do freelance work as an individual, go ahead. Doing so is an excellent way to learn what skills you may need to build your company.
